French Filmmaker Christian Poveda killed by the gang he was documenting

Ugh – this is just so sick.  Yet I sometimes wonder how it doesn’t happen more often.  Definitely feels like a real life scene from SIN NOMBRE.  So sad…

SAN SALVADOR, El Salvador — – The day before he was killed this week, Christian Poveda, veteran photojournalist and documentary filmmaker, said he was worried. The Salvadoran street gangs whose lives Poveda had chronicled in recent years were turning uglier than ever.

“Government authorities have no idea of the monster facing them,” said the French-born journalist, 54, whose documentary film “La Vida Loca” portrayed the desperate, brutal lives of gangs with roots in Los Angeles.

povedaA day after Poveda made these comments, he was dead.

Police said a suspected member of the Mara 18 gang was arrested Thursday on suspicion of involvement Poveda’s killing, the Associated Press reported.

Police said Poveda was shot to death Wednesday, four bullets to the face.

Poveda’s body was found alongside of his car; none of his expensive cameras or equipment was missing.

“Christian is just one of the 10 who will die today,” photographer Edu Ponces wrote on the Salvadoran Internet newspaper El Faro. “If you look long enough down the throat of the lion, he will eat you.”
